About Worn Beadies

My journey as self-taught glass artist. I had always thought I'd have a career in Law Enforcement, after college it just didn't work out. I had always a strong pull to be an artist, no talent to speak of and just many unfinished projects. A friend was doing amazing work with polymer clay and I thought I would give it a go. I instantly loved it and began making beads with the clay. Then with the help of a few books and magazines, I learned how to use wire and tools to make finished jewellery. I was hooked and I was completing pieces! I loved making jewellery so much that I quit my job and enrolled in a full time Jewellery Arts Program at a local college. My portfolio for acceptance was a cookie tin of polymer beads and jewellery. Miraculously was accepted! I devoured every crafty jewellery magazine available to get ready for September 1994. In one issue I came across a woman who was making her own glass beads! Bead-making was something that I had never seen before, EVER!. I knew at that moment I had to learn this. I scoured the city of Toronto looking for someone to teach me, all I found were confused glass artists as they had never heard of such a craft. It was then that I found an ad in a magazine, with the supplier in the USA, ordered a torch some glass and a couple of VHS video tapes and the rest was up to me. I taught myself to make beads, dropped out of jewellery school. Thirty years later, I love it just as much now as when I started.
