About Chickenscratch

Our story began at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 1984, where we met and fell in love. In 1988 we decided to pool our talents and created CHICKENSCRATCH. Our goal was to make meaningful and well-crafted jewelry that was collectible, affordable, and accessible. A whimsical and narrative nature was, and remains, a central theme in our work 37 years later. ` Since the beginning, we have been creating our work almost entirely by hand using thin-gauge sheared brass sheet and wire, our own invented patination process, and colorful enamel paints and leaf. Other materials and processes have entered the picture – found objects, epoxy resin, plastics, castings – but regardless of the materials and the processes, we have remained true to our original intent. We have consistently and creatively navigated four decades to bring smiles to peoples’ faces and joy to their hearts. Our work continues to be completely handmade by the two of us in our Maine studio. We still love what we do and feel that our love of making shows through in our work.
