Dr. Mounir Girgius founded Greenway Biotech, Inc. in 1989 after serving Southern California for over 20 years. When health issues led him to sell, I, Amir Tajer, saw an opportunity. I had just graduated from Washington State University with a mechanical engineering degree. I was 21, had no business experience, and knew one thing for certain: I wanted to build something of my own. Most people around me thought I was making a mistake. They urged me to find a safe job or continue school. But I knew entrepreneurship was the path for me. At first, I knew little about agriculture. I spent countless hours learning about plant nutrition, and what drew me in was the idea of helping people grow their own food without relying on harsh chemicals found in many conventional fertilizers. That mission became personal. At the time, I was struggling with my own health. After years of frustration, I learned diet mattered more than anything else. Once I changed how I ate, I lost 80 pounds. That experience shaped my purpose: helping others live healthier lives by growing healthier food. When I took over Greenway in 2012, nearly all of our sales came from commercial clients. In 2013, we opened online to homeowners for the first time. Within months, most of our sales came directly from families and home gardeners. Later, customer demand inspired our wellness line.
