Making hot sauce is our passion. We blend the finest peppers with fresh fruits and vegetables to create delicious, fiery flavors. Captain Mowatt’s is named after British naval officer Captain Henry Mowatt, who bombarded the city of Portland in 1775, while aboard his ship, the HMS Canceaux. Our original hot sauces were named after Mowatt's ships, Canceaux, Spitfire, and Halifax. Today, Mowatt’s fiery fleet continues to burn Portland, one tongue at a time. Captain Mowatt's is located in Portland, Maine and was founded by Dan Stevens in 1997. Dan's hobby for making hot sauce transformed into a full fledged family business. Dan began brewing his spicy sauces in his family's kitchen, recruiting his three young children to chop chili peppers while wearing gloves and swimming goggles. Today, Captain Mowatt's continues to brew its spicy sauces on Portland's Eastern Promenade, overlooking the same waters Capt. Henry Mowatt sailed upon in 1775.
