About Bay & Birch

Bay & Birch creates tools for a thoughtful life—including the parts of life nobody knows what to say about. Founded by Shannon Smith, a former educator, mother and widow in Ontario, Bay & Birch brings together honest words, simple hand-drawn illustrations and a little well-placed humour. Our grief cards come from lived experience. After losing my husband to cancer, I learned how much it matters when someone keeps showing up—and how hard it can be to find words that feel right. I create cards that acknowledge the missing person, the difficult days and the reality that grief doesn’t follow a timeline. Sometimes tender, sometimes blunt, they make room for feelings that traditional sympathy cards often leave out. That same spirit runs through our growing collection: thoughtful paper goods for grief, fresh starts, messy chapters and everyday life. Each design pairs an uncluttered aesthetic with words that sound like something a real person would actually say. Designed in Ontario and printed locally, Bay & Birch offers retailers a distinctive collection that helps customers say, “I see you. I’m here. You don’t have to make this look pretty.”Read their story
