Everyone knows what jerky is—but what is biltong? This traditional South African snack is the healthier (and tastier!) alternative to jerky you need in your pantry, in your backpack, in your car, and in your purse. In South Africa, “boikey” means “your friend around the bend,” someone who always has your back, and here at Boikey’s, we’re friends and family. Jim Mullins is part of a multi-generational Chicago food family (Mullins Food Products) that makes sauces and condiments for the fast food industry. When the company sold after over 80 years, Jim decided he needed something to do. So, he along with his Wife Line, started a biltong company named Boikey’s. In the early 1990's, the family called upon Jim to expand their business in South Africa. Planning to reside no more than a year, Jim stayed most of that decade . During his time he was introduced to one of South Africa's most famous snacks to date, Biltong. Hundreds of years ago in South Africa, these air-dried beef strips, called biltong, came to be. Jim also met his wife Line along the way. The rest is history. Today, along with their 2 girls and 3 dogs (one who is named Boikey) reside in Long Beach, IN Boikey’s Biltong is high in protein, boasting 32 ounces of protein per bag, all while staying low in sodium.
