About Mar Soreli
Mar Soreli - meaning “Sea Sun” in the Friulian language - begins with Friulane shoes, one of Italy’s most traditional and versatile handcrafted slippers. The story of Friulane dates back more than a century to Friuli, a region in the northeast of Italy. In rural communities, mothers would sew simple slippers for their daughters so they could have something special to wear on festive days, instead of the wooden clogs that most families relied on for everyday life. These shoes, known locally as scarpetz in Carnia, were handmade using whatever materials were available - old linen sheets for the uppers and recycled bicycle tires for the soles. What began as a humble act of creativity and care has become a lasting tradition. At Mar Soreli, that tradition continues today in Friuli, where our Friulane are still hand-sewn by skilled local artisans using techniques passed down through generations. While the craftsmanship remains true to its origins, the materials and colors reflect a more modern expression. Velvet, prints, brocades, and embroidered fabrics bring new life to the classic silhouette, while the signature rubber sole - still inspired by the bicycle tires once used - provides durability and flexibility. Lightweight, comfortable, and easy to wear, Friulane have become a timeless wardrobe staple: elegant enough for everyday dressing yet rooted in authentic Italian heritage.
