About Dunitz & Company

The seeds for Dunitz & Company were planted in 1989 when founder Nancy Dunitz visited Guatemala for the first time. “I had been employed in finance for several years at the movie studios,” notes Nancy. “I was longing to explore the world and focus on my creative side. A vacation took me to Guatemala and I’ve been working there ever since.” During the early stages of Dunitz & Company, Nancy met two artists who introduced beading techniques to a few Mayan women. She began collaborating with these creative women, and soon a viable and sustaining business was born. “We were on the ground floor,” comments Nancy. “Beading was a new medium in Guatemala and by creating fashion-forward designs, I knew I could also create demand.” In 2011, Dunitz & Company introduced the Joanie M collection, named to honor Nancy’s mother. This beautiful fused-glass jewelry line is also handmade in Guatemala. The line was born when Nancy saw tremendous potential in the glass work of a local artisan named Rosa and began collaborating with her. The colorful collection of jewelry they developed has delighted many of our customers and created a sustainable business for Rosa and her staff. Dunitz & Company is a member of the Fair Trade Federation and Museum Store Association, a Gold Certified Business member of Green America and a founding member of Fair Trade Los Angeles.Read their story
