About Skinny Sticks' Maple Syrup

When I asked my children what we should call our business, they came up with variants using our last name. Things like "Hoyt's Maple Syrup" and "Hoyt's Sugar bush". I told them anybody can put their name on a bottle and sell a product, but I wanted to create a brand, something that identified the source of the product. If it meant something to us personally it was just a bonus. My wife suggested from the other room that we should use "Skinny Sticks'." I thought that was genius because it met both criteria. It identifies the source of the maple syrup, the tall skinny leafless trees we tap each spring. It also meant something personal because our last name, "Hoyt", traces its origins back to a 1400's old English word spelled "Hoit." The literal meaning of the word "Hoit" is "tall skinny stick." It was a word used to describe my ancestor's in northern England who were tall, scrawny sharecroppers of Scottish descent.
