BE THE CHANGE The World's Reality of Small-Time Farmers in the Tropics Like most tropical foods, Vanilla beans have a long and broad history of trading injustices to farmers. We can all decide to point fingers at the people involved in buying the vanilla pods, at those curing and drying the beans, or at the traders who sell the pods to wholesalers and retailers, or we can decide to take a stand. How? Not taking for granted the many spices, flavors, and foods grown in the tropics and other areas of the developing world and not opting for fake imitations. With this, we can all play our parts in supporting the welfare of the farmers and their families. In the developed world, our small-scale farmers are backed by various organizations that lobby for better treatment, but such hardly exist in most developing countries. At Earth's Flavors, we have decided to take it a step further by sourcing all our vanilla beans from small-scale farmers in Madagascar, the most neglected people in the vanilla business. We assist them in streamlining their farming process; we also partnered with a Madagascar-based charity organization that helps the children of small-time farmers achieve their educational goals.
