About Black Girl Sunscreen

Black Girl Sunscreen was born from a moment of frustration turned into purpose. In 2016, founder Shontay Lundy—a Black woman with a passion for beauty and wellness—grew tired of applying sunscreen that left a visible white cast on her skin. She, like many people with melanin, struggled to find a product that both protected and honored her complexion.  She realized that the gap in the market was not accidental—it was systemic. Generations of beauty and skincare had overlooked people of color, leaving us to adapt or forgo sun protection entirely. Determined to change that, she set out to formulate a sunscreen that melted seamlessly into deeper skin tones, without compromising on efficacy.  From the first prototype crafted in her kitchen, Black Girl Sunscreen embraced a simple, bold promise: sun protection that doesn’t erase your glow. Early formulas combined botanical and skin-loving ingredients—avocado oil, jojoba, sunflower oil, and more—designed to hydrate while shielding from UV damage.  But the brand’s mission quickly grew beyond formulation. Shontay championed education and awareness—teaching communities of color that melanin does not make you immune to sun damage. Through social media, speaking engagements, and grassroots outreach, Black Girl Sunscreen has helped shift the narrative: sun care is skincare, and every skin tone deserves protection.
