The Story Behind Realtree In 1986, entrepreneur and avid hunter Bill Jordan set out to create a camouflage pattern unlike anything on the market. Inspired by nature, he sketched designs in his parents’ yard in Columbus, Georgia, layering leaves and branches over tree bark to create a realistic, three-dimensional pattern that blended into real hunting environments. With limited resources and only one prototype garment, Jordan promoted his design by sending photographs to retailers across the country—before he even had manufacturing in place. Just days before a major industry trade show, the first garments were completed and displayed, capturing the attention of leading retailers and launching Realtree’s innovative licensing model. From those humble beginnings—working out of a rented church and operating on a shoestring budget—Realtree grew into one of the most recognized brands in the hunting and outdoor industry.
