Cup of Sea seaweed-tea blends combine the soothing experience of tea with the health benefits of Maine seaweed, an incredible source of minerals, antivirals, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents and DHA omega oil. All our teas are blended in small batches in Portland, Maine, by Cup of Sea founder Josh Rogers. Josh's taste for seaweed goes back to his great grandparents, who loved snacking on dried dulse, a reddish-purple algae long popular in northern Maine, Canada, Iceland and Ireland. His inspiration for adding seaweed to tea came during his time in NYC working as a content strategist at Google. During a tea break on a typical Google workday, he hit upon the idea of using kelp and other seaweeds as ingredients in tea. It wasn't long before Josh quit his day job and moved back home to Maine to pursue his idea. In 2017 he began testing out various tea blends on the public at farmer's markets and fairs. Within a year, Cup of Sea was on shelves at more than 50 gift shops, specialty stores, cafes and grocery stores in Maine, New England and NYC. Cup of Sea also has a booth at Maine's landmark Common Ground Fair and has been featured by Martha Stewart, the New York Times, HGTV, Forbes, Sierra Club Magazine, Lonely Planet and more. Today, Josh is the owner of Heritage Seaweed, a boutique shop in Portland, Maine, specializing in all things seaweed.
