Momo Cocoa® creates exceptionally creamy, glow'd up, non-dairy cocoa mixes and earthy, robust brewing cocoas. After becoming vegan in 2011, Yvonne began making cocoa mixes at home. She found that many of the vegan cocoa options available at the time lacked the creaminess and rich chocolate flavor she craved and set out to find out why. As it turns out, most cocoas contain, at most, 10% cocoa butter. Cocoa makers add dairy in order to bring back the creaminess lost by removing cocoa butter. Yvonne knew that a better way to maintain the creaminess of cocoa without adding dairy or emulsifiers like lecithin existed so she started researching the science of chocolate making. Turns out, using quality, less processed cocoa which retains more of the creamy (and healthy) natural cocoa butter was the trick. Along the way she became interested in the history of chocolate and wanted to create flavorful, unique drinks that paid homage to the long history and travels of the cacao bean. Eventually she and her partner, Ian decided that they wanted to share the story of drinking chocolate with others. In 2017 they started Momo Cocoa in a commercial kitchen in Beaverton with only a few hundred dollars. 5 years later, we’re still in that Beaverton kitchen roasting, mixing, and packing every batch of cocoa and Momo Tea by hand. Our mixes are non-dairy and we are proud members of the Good Food Guild as well as recommended by the Food Empowerment Project.Read their story
