About Elizabeth Benotti Ceramics

Making things by hand is my response to the world. From a studio in the woods on the coast of Maine, I handbuild each piece through coiling, pinching, and slab construction in porcelain, mixing my own slips and glazes and moving between techniques like Mishima inlay, wax resist linework, and carved surfaces. Every piece is touched, shaped, and finished by me alone. Clay is full of limitations and working within them is where I spark. Problem solving is woven into every step, and that tension between what the material will and won't do is part of what makes each piece worth making. I believe the objects we live with can do more than serve a function. They can catch your eye and create a mood. I design my pieces to work together like building blocks, so that a planter, a platter, a pitcher, or a small dish can come together into a still life that feels entirely your own. Each piece is just as valuable in use as it is sitting quietly, waiting for its next opportunity to be touched. My aesthetic is clean and modern, but warm with the evidence of touch. I work in porcelain for its luminous quality and the way it holds color and detail. Each piece is one of a kind or part of a small run, made with intention. In a world pulling us toward speed and screens, handmade objects offer something different. An invitation to slow down, cook something worth serving in a beautiful dish, call a friend over for coffee. Your home should be a refuge and a reflection of who you are.
