We are in the Belice Valley, in the territory of Menfi. Already at the end of the 1700s, when it became the property of the Ravidà family, the large estate of La Gurra, which was naturally suited for olive cultivation, produced excellent olive oil from centuries-old trees. The name of the extra virgin oil today is the same as the family: it lacks the final accent, but certainly not those on aroma and purity. Under the guidance of Nicolò Ravidà, from the 1980s, the company began to aim for high-quality production, but at that time there was a widespread belief that quality oil in Italy could only be produced in Tuscany. Natalia, Nicolò's daughter, lived between Paris and London, where she worked as a journalist for the BBC, and she began to sense that a new consumption trend was about to emerge. So, she convinced her father to create a label, to brand the company's production, as was happening in Tuscany where oil bottles were displayed in wine shops. The oil received immediate acclaim from consumers and the press. What was obvious to us Sicilians was considered surprising abroad. We thus began to contact the first buyers and participate in industry fairs. We were pioneers: in a short time, our oil was displayed in the most important showcases of London's Golden Triangle - Selfridges, Harrods, Harvey Nichols - and an amazing market opened up.Read their story
