In the summer of 2018, after 4 years of operating my tiny furniture making business, Salt Creek Farmhouse, from our own farmhouse on an acreage outside of town, I was finally getting ready to open the doors of Salt Creek Mercantile, my newly reimagined (and newly renamed) home wares shop in our small historic town of Ashland, NE. Based on my start with handmade furniture, I knew I wanted to focus on carrying the uniquely lovely handmade wares of other makers and artisans, and in addition, I wanted to feature a single, perfect line of candles that we would stay loyal to. But after months of searching and testing dozens of candles and failing to find “the one”, I decided to try making my own. Hundreds of testers and one kitchen counter saturated in candle oils later, I had our first batch of finished candles, and they were perfect. From opening day in August 2018 to now, our candles have continued to be our number one selling item at our small town corner store, and for good reason. All of S.C. Mercantile’s candles, made with organic soy wax and clean burning oils, are made by hand, every step of the way. Every tablespoon measured, wick secured, pitcher stirred, label neatly placed, wax poured, and box carefully packed and stamped, always by hand.
