Pocha/pocho is a derogatory term used to describe Chicanxs and those who have left Mexico. Sterotypically, pochxs speak English and lack fluency in Spanish. In a sense, pochxs aren't "Mexican enough" in the eyes of other Mexicans. Growing up as a first generation Mexican-American in my family, I heard the name Pocha a ton! I always felt less and felt like being born in the USA was a bad thing. I felt neither accepted fully from my Mexican side nor could I ever fully identify with just my American side. So, I decided I'm neither from here nor there - I'm BOTH! We decided to start our small business during the COVID 19 pandemic, when we were all quarantined and worried about what the future held for us. Pocha Pets Boutique carries all Benito Moda MX products, a brand that was created and launched in Guadalajara, Mexico by Jessamyn Gonzalez Carrasco, my best friend. Jess started with her pet clothes brand by attending pop ups and local open air Mercados. She had the opportunity to open a store front in March 2019. When quarantine hit Mexico Jessamyn was forced to close her store front after having been open for only a month. I decided to invest in Benito Moda MX to help out my friend and introduce an amazing Mexican brand to my fellow Chicagoans. That is how Pocha Pets Boutique was born.
