About Clocky

I created Clocky in 2005 while I was a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As an over-sleeper who was routinely late for my morning classes, I knew waking up would require some ingenuity. Lying in bed one morning, I realized that the alarm clock needed a makeover. It didn't have to be a black box that stares blankly, often failing at its sole job. Combining my love for aesthetics with my passion for fixing things, Clocky was born. I presented my initial prototype, a funny-looking shag-covered Clocky made with materials from my local hardware store, to my MIT Media Lab course, Industrial Design Intelligence. Almost overnight, my prototype went viral when a blogger posted Clocky on a popular tech blog. Clocky and I became media darlings, traveling everywhere together. We graced the cover of Inc. magazine and skirted around the stages at the Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Today Show, and Good Morning America. I gave thousands of interviews for publications, TV shows, and radio stations, from the New York Times and Forbes to BuzzFeed and NPR. I was still a student when Clocky was born, so I spent the next year figuring out how to put a product on the market. I bootstrapped my new venture and launched Clocky in late 2006.
