About Jan Elizabeth Hooked Rugs
I have made hand hooked rugs for more than four decades now, as well as repairing approximately 50 antique rugs, some from the 1800’s. Now I am enjoying designing and making the Cheery Trees. They make me happy to create them and share them with you. As a child of an artist who also made hooked rugs, I was surrounded by beautiful rugs and all the fabric and tools to make them. My mother taught me to hook when I was 5 years old. I inherited loads of vintage wool from her as well as strands and strands of beaded Christmas garland. Some of the vintage wool was clothing. After laundering, I deconstructed many pants, skirts, dresses and jackets. The wool was then cut into strips using strip slitters, (manual crank-handled devices that cut the wool on the straight of grain). The strips are then hand hooked onto cotton monks cloth or linen foundation cloth.
