About Stobbe 1776
Stobbe Machandel is one of the oldest juniper brandies ever: In 1776, Peter Stobbe, from a Dutch Mennonite family, began distilling a juniper schnapps in the area around Danzig, which he called Machandel (Low German for juniper berries). His trademark: The barrel bottle; a bottle shape that is intended to remind of the barrels in which the machandel rests before it is filtered and bottled. Its taste: dry and dry. The recipe, which is still secret to this day, is still in the family. Only this much is known: It originally comes from Holland and is based on the production of a genever, which is considered the forefather of gin. The demand for the Stobbe rose from year to year: In the beginning, farmers, fishermen and boatmen in particular appreciated it, and a short time later, so did the showers and sack bearers, the timber and spice captains, the tax collectors and travel agents. Stobbe soon also became a middle-class drink — and the saying “Even a Stobbeian trade doesn't disturb a solid lifestyle” became a household word in the area around Danzig. The newest “family member”, 1776 Stobbe Blackcurrant and Bergamot, also has this claim: It combines the classic Stobbe Machandel with the fruitiness of black currant and the fine acidity of bergamot.
