About Handwork Studio

Handwork Studio operates at the intersection of craft, commerce, research and design, mobilising high levels of skill and tradition to sustain local communities while re-contextualising traditional artisan techniques within a contemporary design aesthetic. Handwork Studio is committed to design innovation through socially and environmentally sustainable methods. Textiles used in our home and accessories collections are made in collaboration with artisans working in Ajrak dyeing in Sindh, Pakistan. In this complex and ancient process, artisans work in complete harmony with their environment: the sun, river, animals, plant dyes, trees and mud are all part of the art of making Ajrak. Dyeing slowly with numerous layers creates fabrics that are rich and nuanced in surface and colour. All of our textiles are made to last and to be a personal pleasure and humble luxury – they are respectful of both consumers and makers. Handwork Studio team consists of experienced Canadian designers Munira Amin and Rachel MacHenry. Read their story
