About the artist behind 10 Buffalos Art Shana Yellow Calf Lukinich, an enrolled member of the Northern Arapaho in Wyoming, has been producing art in various mediums since the 1990s. Her contemporary art reflects her plains heritage (Arapaho/Shoshone), her mother’s Chippewa/Metis ancestry, along with a Pacific Northwest Coastal influence from the Puget Sound area of Washington where she grew up. Shana is registered with the Department of the Interior Source Directory for Native American Artists. She also appeared in the Indianz magazine in November 2020 as one of their featured artists. The Soil Gallery in Seattle exhibited Shana’s art and carvings in November 2019. Allied Arts in Bellingham had her art on display October 2022. Then in the summer of 2022 and 2023 Shana had two pieces on exhibit at the Washington State History Museum for their ‘In the Spirit’ exhibit. She is also a recipient of a grant from the city of Redmond to create a new piece of art for the new senior center opening May 2024. Her artwork is done in very bright colors and often tells stories either about events in life or stories told to her by others. While some of the artwork reflects her desire to merge current dancing forms with traditional forms. Currently, she is working on creating a children’s book based off the piece ‘Frybread Trails’ and the Frybread Gang.
