About Vilaiti

Raised in America, there was a sense of displacement within me. I thought visiting my motherland of India would instill a sense of belonging, but it only left me more lost. And so I found myself existing in this liminal space of not being from here or there; questions of who am I, what am I, where am I from would always percolate to the surface. I found myself drifting as a foreigner, in a foreign land. And that’s where the genesis of Vilaiti came from. Vilaiti, which means foreigner in Hindi, is a space where I can harmonize my American upbringing and Indian heritage, reclaiming my identity.
