The catalyst for launching Grammar came out of misfortune. In early 2016, a fire in designer Althea Simons' apartment building took all of her belongings, and, in trying to replace her wardrobe, she concluded that the perfect garments for her life did not yet exist. Simons, with degrees in neuroscience, fashion design, and an MBA, decided to apply her eye for detail and nuance and love of an entrepreneurial challenge to creating perfect wardrobe essentials, beginning with the white shirt. Grammar proposes a discipline that methodically seeks the truth, that does not discriminate. This translates to the inclusive approach to design, creating proportions with underlying ease and practicality that are fitting to women of all forms. Further to the functional and aesthetic considerations, the line is rooted in the belief that the integrity of a design is equally defined by its ecological impact. Grammar shirts are made in New York City using shell buttons and 100% organic cotton, both recyclable and biodegradable. To ensure that the cotton is of the highest quality, Grammar requires GOTS certification for its compliance with the strictest standards of sustainability and labor rights from seed to finished fabric.Read their story
