In 1974, a Japanese illustrator, Yuko Shimizu, started working for a company called Sanrio, which specialized in rubber sandals decorated with strawberry prints. Eager to create another best-selling product, Yuko and her fellow illustrators had a simple brief centered around the word 'kawaii', meaning cute. From here Hello Kitty was born, a design that quickly translated to becoming Sanrio’s fastest selling product. Hello Kitty has since turned into a globally recognized brand!
