About Karen Dawn Curtis

My journey as a ceramic artist is deeply influenced by my Christian faith, which guides every aspect of my creative process. My formal education—a BA (Hons), Master of Art in Ceramics, and PGCE in Adult Education—provided me with the technical foundation, but my faith shapes my work beyond technique. I draw inspiration from the story of Bezalel, chosen by God to create sacred designs for the Tabernacle, seeing my work as an act of divine creativity, where each piece reflects the presence of God in the creative process. In 2016, I discovered the joy of adding colour to my ceramics, a breakthrough that allowed me to infuse beauty and purpose into every creation. I embrace the balance of form and function, designing pieces to be used and cherished daily, from mugs to vases. My work also draws from Japandi aesthetics, focusing on natural textures and calming tones, which evoke the tranquillity of nature and the peace of God. I celebrate the beauty of imperfection, seeing each unique variation in shape and glaze as part of the piece’s story. These imperfections, like in life, add authenticity and depth, making each item unique. My ceramics reflect a deep connection to nature, creating peaceful, functional, and spiritually meaningful objects.
