Mary Vallis Cowan founded Canadian Stitchery in 2016, inspired by childhood afternoons learning to stitch under the wide Alberta sky. Years later, returning to the craft as a young professional, Mary found the patterns available didn’t reflect her style—too traditional, too cutesy, not quite her. So she started designing her own. What began with pencil crayons and graph paper evolved into digital design, and eventually into laser-cut patterns crafted from sustainable wood—blending a timeless craft with a distinctly modern aesthetic. Today, Canadian Stitchery operates out of a dedicated studio, with new designs released several times a year. Mary’s work is carried in top independent cross stitching, craft, and design shops across Canada, the United States, Italy, and beyond, and has been featured at premier shows including Toronto’s One of a Kind Show. Her line of “ugly sweater” designs is a smash hit, bringing customers back year after year for new releases. More recently, she has expanded into innovative 3D designs that—like the ugly sweaters—are completely unique within the cross stitch market. Mary takes pride in connecting beginners of all ages to this traditional craft through a modern lens, creating thoughtfully designed kits made with high-quality materials.
