Buoy's founder, Rene Hallen, is a free-dive instructor who has first-hand encountered the amount of plastic waste in our oceans during his dives. An art and fashion photographer by profession, he assembled a team, including an award-winning designer and an operations leader, to realize his vision of making functional art objects with the least environmental impact possible. Every Buoy product you purchase economically incentivizes the collection of plastic before it enters the ocean and therefore prevents ocean pollution. As importantly, every Buoy product you purchase is designed so that it could be displayed in a museum and with best-in-class fit for purpose. Our first product, the Buoy bottle, holds 30-oz of water, but weighs only 7 ounces empty: So light, you only carry the water. It opens in the center to allow for proper cleaning in a dishwasher, so no more stale water bottle musk. The thumb-loop allows it to be carried easily and comfortably. The bold, unique silhouette speaks for itself. At the same time, the Buoy bottle has the lowest carbon footprint of any water bottle on the market. It's made of 100% Oceanbound plastic collected in North America and manufactured at a plant in Northern California that generates its own electricity from solar power. If you credit the carbon that was saved by recovering the plastic before it entered the ocean, the Buoy bottle has a negative carbon footprint. Read their story
