About Christopher Rouleau

My name is Christopher Rouleau, and I am an independent designer and lettering artist in Toronto. Along with my full-time freelance work (of graphic design, custom lettering & sign painting), I am also the co-founder of Ligatures, Toronto's hub for typography. I am a public speaker, lettering instructor, and published author, and my work has been featured in Spacing Magazine, Uppercase Magazine & Flare Magazine. I attended the Alberta College of Art & Design, and hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Calgary. I recently received a Communication Arts Award of Excellence in Typography. My passion is creating thoughtful hand-lettered art & objects. My brand is an extension of my personal art practice & research, which focusses on the analog techniques of brush lettering & sign painting, rooted in the pre-digital commercial arts style of the 1940s-1960s. My work brings this tradition forward into the 21st century, with two main objectives: to share my deep, heartfelt appreciation of the craft of handmade letterforms & typography, and to inspire (and challenge) people with text-based art.
