Long hours in the pool led to heartburn and drove him to low acid drinks like tea. After college, working long hours in finance, he turned to coffee or energy drinks to stay alert. James soon realized he was drinking the beverage he needed, not the beverage he wanted, so he set out to develop a healthy, lighter, tea-based energy beverage. Zest tea launched in 2014 through a successful crowdfunding campaign. The company quickly developed a fanatical fan-base, was named best new product at the world tea expo and became a top 10 selling tea brand on amazon. In 2016, zest launched its bagged teas into retail and quickly followed with a line of tea-based, ready-to-drink energy beverages in 2018. The line of energy drinks expanded into 6 flavors, including several zero sugar flavors. In 2022, zest developed a selection of functional hot teas with sleep, gut health, and immunity blends, and also launched a line of hydration powder packs, including hydration + energy as well as hydration + focus flavors.
