As true foodies, we have been obsessed with food and spices for years. My husband traveled the world as an airline captain bringing spices home to me and I was busy creating new recipes. Along the way I attended classes at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa. With Culinary Spice Merchants, we are branching out to create fabulous spices from all over the world. But first, we stepped back to a simpler time when food was honest…and a handshake was your word. So we created The Old West Collection. Each spice comes with a story that is based on real people who loved food, beginning with Aunt Lou and her special seasoning. She was a freed slave from Tennessee who planned on striking it rich in the gold mines of the Dakota Territory. Funny how life works out. She did end up wealthy, not through her mining, but from her own incredible cooking talent. Then there’s Lizzie Johnson, who was the only woman to drive her own cattle to market. She loved great food and brought her own spices along on the trail. Texas Secret BBQ Seasoning was inspired by her. Worcestershire Sauce was a great addition to spice up meals in the old west, so we added Powdered Worcestershire Sauce to the line and it’s been a hit. The Vaqueros in California blended their Mexican flavors with California limes and the result is our Vaquero BBQ Rub. We also have Cowboy Coffee Rub for delicious depth of flavor.
