Anya Smeenge, born in 1997 in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, is a painter based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her style could be described as surrealist with elements of primitivism. In her work, she explores the subconscious mind through symbols and dream-like imagery with watercolors, colored pencils, oil pastels, and oil paints. Anya’s work explores the themes of childhood, personal growth, and change. Anya used to work as an English teacher and writer. But after COVID started, she decided to take her art more seriously. The water series embodies a sense of calm and groundedness that only nature can provide. Since childhood, Anya has felt a deep connection to water and feels honored to show her love for it through her art.
