About Justine Gilbuena

Hi, I’m Justine! (She/Her) I’m a Filipina illustrator born and raised in Queens, NY. From my home studio, I like to draw characters in cozy or silly settings that celebrate community and curiosity. Growing up, I was inspired by the illustrations of Quentin Blake and fondly remember spending school afternoons with friends painting a life-size portrait of Willy Wonka as well as making a giant paper mache peach carried by seagulls. Constantly inspired, I loved the world building of Tove Jansson and Richard Scarry as well as the visual storytelling of Hey Arnold and My Neighbors the Yamadas. I don’t think there’s ever a day when I’m not inspired and if it’s not in books or films, I find inspiration in loved ones, my cat, kind strangers and their pets, wildflowers, seasons (especially autumn), handmade trinkets, and old objects along with the stories they all carry. Drawing is always a work in progress and I hope that I can grow to be more playful and colorful. I’ve also been slowly working on my stationery shop since 2016 and started my art mail club in the winter of 2021. Having the shop and club has helped me with my drawing process and I’m super grateful to patrons and their support. Inclusivity and diversity are both important values for me and my work.
