About Deirdre Wilson Pottery

Artist’s Statement: Working with red stoneware, Deirdre Wilson’s functional handmade pottery showcases her skill at the wheel. Recognized for their refinement and elegance they have a bewitching effect on many who use them, quickly becoming the most beloved dishes in the cupboard. With their vibrancy and warmth, the glaze pallet invites the most discerning buyer to gravitate towards them. Deirdre Wilson Pottery also has a selective line of decorative pieces. All pieces are wheel thrown, some altered by hand, then fired in an electric kiln to cone 6. All but a few are microwave and dishwasher safe Production Process: While listening to either music or a podcast, I create pottery in the basement of my 1890’s farmhouse. My clay of choice is Plainsman 350, a red stoneware mined in Alberta. Each piece is thrown on an electric wheel. I then tool, bisque fire, and glaze fire to cone 6 in an electric kiln. Some pieces are hand altered during the leather hard stage. My glaze studio is in the garage and in the warmer months I open the large door and enjoy watching our five chickens pecking, the birds at the feeders feeding and admiring all of the flowers in the gardens. All but one of my glazes are my own recipes and mixed by me. My technique is dipping the pieces into large buckets, but I also use paint brushes, sponges, and occasionally wax resist. Read their story
