Years ago I went horse shopping with my trainer in Florida, and found my heart horse Clint. Of course, I spoiled him. He deserved it. The usual carrots, apples, peppermints and everything he loved. I found a recipe for ‘horse treats’. I gave them a try, and of course, Clint, being a food driven horse, loved all of them. I modified the recipe over and over, making them easier to make, and more attractive. At Christmas all the horses in our barn got a bag tied to their stall. People asked me for the recipe, and they tried them and loved them. Then, a friend of mine said “Hey Sue, please give me the recipe or sell them to me”. A lightbulb went on. Why not? I already had another small business, so was not afraid to try. I spent the next 6 months or so refining my recipe to ensure I could get consistent results, figuring out packaging, labeling, and all the legalese I needed to ensure I had all the business concerns handled. I sold out my first order at a tack shop in 2 days. I was on the roll! From there, it was a matter of growing my business and offering new sizes and flavors. We went from mixing in dishpans to mixing in cement mixers, from buying single gallons of molasses to multiple 5-gallon buckets at a time, from plastic containers delivered in boxes to pallets of containers. We love to support small businesses like we are, so we love independent tack shops that care about their clients and have a connection to their community.Read their story
