My life changed forever in my late teens when I lost my beloved dad, Kevin, to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He was just 56. At the time, cancer was still something people whispered about — “The Big C” — a term we barely said aloud, let alone discussed openly. Support for families was limited, and honest conversations around serious illness were rare. That experience left a lasting impact. It shaped my belief in the importance of talking openly, not just about cancer, but about all of life’s harder moments. Early awareness and open dialogue can change outcomes, bring comfort and most importantly, help people feel less alone. That’s why I started The Elephant In The Room Gifts and why our cards exist. A well-chosen card can be the first step in starting a difficult conversation. Sometimes, especially in tough moments, humour can be a gentle way in. It can break the ice, lighten the load and show someone you care.
