Description
This paper making mold and deckle is a handmade adaption of the Eastern style papermaking mold and deckle. In the Eastern version, the screen is removable—and that is the version I prefer as the screen can easily be replace when needed. In China, this Eastern style mold and deckle is called 抄纸器; translated literally, it's "fishing-paper tool". In Japan it's called "sugeta". In Vietnam, it's called "liềm seo" (bamboo screen), and "khung seo" (frames). The mold and deckle is made from pine wood with a mesh. Several coats of Tung oil is applied to the wooded frames. The frames are also hinged. The screen is where the pulp is collected and strained. It is made with three parts—fine mesh screen, bamboo mat, and edge sticks made from mahogany wood. The mesh screen is stitched in place along the top edge of the bamboo mat. The mesh screen prevents the pulp from getting caught in the bamboo mat. Finish paper size is approximately 4X6 inches.
