American Toffee is generally harder, as it's made with granulated white sugar (e.g. Almond Roca®, Heath Bar®) usually cooked with nuts and rolled in chocolate. This is actually what the Brits would call "Buttercrunch"...introduced by English immigrant William Loft in New York City in 1860 (thus the misnomer).
