Gritty glass votive altar candle from Flaming Idols. When Gritty was introduced as a mascot for the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team his “monstrous” appearance was mocked in the media, but like many queer monsters before him, Gritty embraced himself and soon the public did too. He quickly became aligned with The underdog, gender non-conformity and anti-fascism. A Philadelphia city council resolution in support of Gritty notes, “Gritty’s NHL debut, featuring a bottoms-up fall onto the ice, is a metaphor for the vulnerability that each of us face as we, too, skate onto the slippery ice that is life.” Candle is hand-poured with soy wax and burns for approximately 10 hours. Glass votives are 2.5in high and 2in wide at the base. Each votive is affixed with an opaque sticker with an image of a person and on the opposite side, a translucent sticker with biographical information about the person. Stickers are water-resistant.
