This Wooden Ornament is handcrafted by artist Barbara Barratt and her team in her Santa Fe studio. The design, from the Day of the Dead series, features a couple in a hot air balloon -- commissioned by the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. The entire Day of the Dead series is brightly colored and whimsical homage to the Dia de Los Muertos traditions. The belief is that souls of the departed are returning for a brief visit. The living don’t mourn them; they prepare for their return as if welcoming honored guests to a lively party. It is a celebration of life. It is an artistic way to celebrate that our ancestors and departed loved ones are remembered and honored; they walk with us and watch over us.
