The Australian Sugar Glider, scientifically known as Petaurus breviceps, is a small, tree-dwelling marsupial native to Australia. They were recently split into three species in 2021, with the Sugar Glider now known to occur only in eastern Australia on the coastal side of the Great Dividing Range. These nocturnal creatures have a membrane extending from their fifth finger to their ankle, enabling them to glide up to 50 meters between trees. They are most active at night, sleeping by day in nests made of leaves in tree hollows. Sugar Gliders are very social animals, forming ‘clans’ of up to seven adults and their young, and they are known to defend their territory aggressively. They have a sweet tooth, hence their name, and their diet includes insects, birds, nectar, and pollens. The Sugar Glider commonly gives birth to twins, which remain in the pouch for just over two months.
