Materials: Jade, Bone, Brass Closure: Brass lobster clasp Length: 22 inches Story behind the design… Sourced in Bangkok, Thailand, 2002 — I came across these brilliant white strands at Chatuchak Market just before leaving for Chiang Mai to celebrate my birthday. While rushing through the city with a backpack twice my size, I collided with a pole, shattered a porcelain gift I’d chosen for my mum, and arrived at the station just in time to watch my train pull away. I stood there, gutted. Out of nowhere, a police officer waved me over saying something in Thai that felt like ‘hop on’… He loaded me and my enormous sack onto his tiny moped and raced me to the next station as the rain began to come down… I made it! These white jade stones remained in my archive for 24 years before finding their place in this sculptural piece. Paired with richly patterned African bone and brass, they carry a little of that journey—my first trip to Southeast Asia—and the beginning of many more market trips to come. Xx DiG
