The Art of Hand-Tooling- Our signature is our tooling. Hand-tooling leather is a dying art, requiring a level of focus and muscle memory that takes years to master. The artisan dampens the leather to just the right moisture content—a state known as "cased." If it is too wet, the impressions will fade; if it is too dry, the steel will not bite. Using a swivel knife, the artisan cuts the intricate outlines of our designs directly into the leather. There is no eraser, no "undo" button. A single slip of the blade can ruin days of work. Once the lines are cut, a variety of small, specialized stamping tools are struck with a mallet, one by one, to create depth, texture, and shadow. When you look closely at the swirling florals and woven basket-weave textures on a Leather Panache bag, you are looking at thousands of individual mallet strikes. You are looking at hours of human breath, focus, and dedication. The Integrity of the Stitch We refuse to use machines for our primary construction. Every major seam on a Leather Panache product is saddle-stitched by hand using two needles and a single piece of waxed linen thread.
